Assignment

Christmas advertising assignment

Task 1 – Communication methods

For our production we will communicate with the audience by trying to use a range of different methods. These methods include different camera angles, slow motion, black and white and also different titles.  We are also planning to use different technical equipment to improve the quality of our production. We are going to be using a fig rig, this is because we want the camera to be steady and so it looks nice and smooth which makes it look really like John Lewis and also really professional. Also a tripod will be used for steadiness. To communicate with the audience we are going to product a John Lewis style advert. This is because there is a lot of emotion involved and families that enjoy Christmas will be able to relate to our concept and idea. The reason why we want to do this is because John Lewis Christmas adverts have been really popular for over the years. We are going to use homage from different John Lewis adverts to take ideas and combine them all and use them in our advertisement to create one big idea. Also, throughout developing our ideas and putting them on screen we have assigned different job roles amongst the team. Anya is director and in charge of costume, Lewis is 1st assistant director and I am the camera operator.  I have explored different technical skills and also put them into practice. I have explored and improved skills when I made my Greggs advertisement. This improved my directing skills because I directed the advert and it turned out how I wanted it to be. Also, I explored using the camera and tripod to film Lewis' Greggs advertisement which helped me film the Christmas advert as I got more comfortable using the camera and tripod. Also, another technical skill I have used is editing, I edited my Greggs advertisement which is really important because it is the first time I edited and I have improved my editing skills. This improved skill is important because it will help me edit the Christmas advert if I need to. Also, another technical skill is using the tripod and is really important when it comes to filming anything. I have applied this skill safely in another project as It was raining and I had to make sure the tripod and camera didn't get damaged from the rain so I covered the camera and tripod with a coat to prevent any damage. I have also helped Lewis edit parts of the Christmas advert for example adding music for the emotion and the mood. This is a great technical skill as music plays a huge part in advertisements and is the most noticeable thing in my opinion. I have also learn basis camera use which is turning on the camera and recording. I have also learnt how to zoom in and out. I have also learn how to charge some of the cameras by removing the battery and charging them. Also before coming onto this course I did not have a clue how to set up a tripod and use it properly. During this project I have learnt how to set up a tripod and put a camera on it by using a tripod plate etc. Also I have learnt basic editing as before I didn't really have a clue how to edit and export videos. I learnt editing while doing the Greggs advert as I edited that and put music in the background. During using multiple cameras I learn different things about different cameras. I didn't like using the DSLR as zooming in and out was really awkward. I liked using the cannon as its much more simpler. I did learn how to zoom in on the DSLR and the cannon camera. I also learnt that you have to click the focus button on the camera when filming otherwise it will obviously be out of focus and the quality will be really bad. I have obviously learnt a lot of practical skills since the start but I have also learn a lot in paperwork. Paperwork is really important and I have learnt how to complete call sheets, how to complete scripts which is important for the actors to follow but also important for the crew. I have also learnt how to complete a storyboard properly that's gives a clear story but in pictures instead of text. Furthermore, I have also learnt about risk assessments which is important when going out on location as you need to be aware of the dangers and safety for the crew and especially the actors. Overall, pre production planning is what I have learnt lots about as without planning there is no production. I first learnt how to do a script when doing the Greggs advert although I have helped out doing the script during the pre production of the Christmas advert.
